One morning, you look out of the window and, instead of a lush green lawn, see mounds of loose soil. For many people, that is the moment when the “war on moles” begins. But anyone who instinctively reaches for traps, poison or even exhaust fumes is not only harming animals and the soil, but also giving up an unexpected ally for their lawn and garden.
Why molehills are so frustrating
Moles usually tunnel 15 to 30 centimetres below the lawn surface. What we notice are the little volcanoes of soil that suddenly appear scattered everywhere. They can make a lawn look ruined, with every dark mound immediately drawing the eye.
Uneven patches develop beneath the turf. Children can easily twist an ankle while playing, lawnmowers bump over the ground, and bed edging may become unstable. In vegetable gardens, young plants can be pushed upwards and root zones loosened. It often looks more dramatic than it really is, but understandably causes concern.
Many gardeners respond with the attitude: “Only one creature is digging here – and it is me.” The trouble is that this instinctive reaction overlooks what is actually happening underground and the unpaid work the mole is carrying out.
What moles really do beneath your lawn
The European mole (Talpa europaea) is a highly specialised digging animal. Its body resembles a compact, furry torpedo, while its broad front paws work almost like miniature excavator buckets. In loose, fairly damp soil rich in earthworms and insect larvae, it creates a dense network of tunnels.

Many gardeners turn to extreme methods, including poisoned bait, car exhaust fumes, smoke cartridges or even small explosive devices. Such approaches are not only morally questionable, but are often simply illegal. They can harm people, pets and, over time, soil life.
Anyone trying to “eradicate” moles using chemicals or exhaust fumes loses a natural ally against soil compaction and root damage for years.
The risks are obvious:
- Health risks: Exhaust fumes and chemicals can remain in the soil, where children and pets may come into contact with them.
- Environmental damage: Poison spreads through the ground and affects beneficial animals and microorganisms too.
- Legal issues: Many products are prohibited for use in private gardens, and misuse can be costly.

- Wildlife-friendly corners with wild perennials or a flower meadow

- Margins beside hedges or behind garden sheds
In these places, moles work as free soil caretakers. Essentially, they perform jobs for which others might otherwise need expensive equipment or labour-intensive soil cultivation.
Protecting lawns and beds selectively
For an ornamental lawn or a neatly kept vegetable garden, there is a comparatively simple, though somewhat labour-intensive, solution: fine-mesh mole netting.
This mesh is installed 40 to 50 centimetres below ground when creating a new lawn or bed. The usual process is as follows:
- Remove the topsoil and set it aside.
- Excavate the area to the required depth.
- Lay the mole mesh across the whole surface, slightly overlapping it at the edges.
- Refill with soil, level the ground, then sow the lawn or plant the bed.

Molehills do not have to remain like little craters for weeks. A relaxed response can even make practical use of them.
- Simply level the mounds: Spread the soil with a rake, then overseed if the grass looks damaged.
- Use the soil for sowing or potting: The fine, stone-free soil is excellent for seeds in pots, trays or window boxes.
- Use animal deterrents in targeted spots: Metal rods topped with bottles or dedicated ultrasonic devices disturb moles acoustically, encouraging them to move to quieter areas.
Every molehill can become free filling for pots and propagation trays – rather than frustration, it offers a practical benefit.
The best balance between a tidy appearance and a functioning underground ecosystem comes from guiding the animals rather than trying to drive them away completely.
Common confusion: mole or vole?
Many people confuse moles with voles, and that has consequences. Voles really do feed on roots, tubers and young fruit trees, and can cause significant damage. Moles do not.

They make soil more permeable, help counter problems when lawns suffer from dry spells or waterlogging, and reduce underground pests.
Those who accept that a garden is a living system rather than a showroom floor from a furniture shop often end up with less work, lower costs and healthier plants. A few mounds around the edges are no longer a disaster, but instead a sign that something beneath the surface is working for the garden, not against it.
With a considered mix of protected zones, tolerated areas and gentle guidance, the mole changes from enemy to quiet ally. The greatest mistake remains instinctively reaching for heavy-handed measures and driving away that very ally, together with all its benefits for the lawn, soil and vegetable garden.
