Back denies the claim
The search for Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, has taken another turn. Journalists at The New York Times say that Satoshi may be Adam Back.
The New York Times investigation into Bitcoin’s creator
The publication reached this conclusion after an investigation lasting a year and a half. Its authors compared numerous emails and online posts written by Back with Satoshi’s messages and publications, finding what they describe as striking similarities.
Their theory is also supported by an examination of Back’s online activity during the period when Satoshi was still active on the internet.
Adam Back and the Satoshi Nakamoto theory
Back is far from an unknown name in the cryptocurrency world. The British businessman is also a cryptography specialist and is known to have communicated with Nakamoto online. In addition, he created the Hashcash system in 1997, with a similar mechanism forming part of Bitcoin’s foundation.
Back has already responded to The New York Times article, saying that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto and that the evidence presented by its journalists is simply a collection of coincidences and similar wording from people with comparable experience and interests.
“I am not Satoshi, but from the very beginning I have paid close attention to the positive social consequences of cryptography, privacy on the internet and electronic money.”
Back’s links to the cypherpunk movement
This is not the first time Back has been named as Bitcoin’s creator. At the very least, it is worth noting that he is associated with the so-called cypherpunks: people interested in cryptography who also advocate anonymity.
