Adding sugar to a snake plant has become a popular trick, supposedly boosting the microorganisms in the potting mix and making the plant more vigorous. There is some truth behind the idea: sugar provides a readily available source of carbon for microorganisms. However, it does not feed beneficial organisms alone; it may also encourage fungi, unwanted bacteria and insects. For that reason, it is neither necessary nor particularly advisable for keeping this plant healthy.
What is sugar added to a snake plant pot meant to do?
Supporters of this method say that small amounts of sugar feed the microbiota living in the potting mix. Certain microorganisms do indeed use simple sugars for energy, contributing to the breakdown of organic matter and nutrient cycling.
That does not make sugar a fertiliser for the plant itself, though. A snake plant creates its own carbohydrates through photosynthesis, while it mainly needs water and mineral elements from its growing medium.

A concentrated carbon source can quickly raise microbial activity, use up oxygen and promote fermentation, particularly in a damp pot with limited airflow. This is precisely the sort of environment that is unsuitable for a snake plant, as its roots are quite sensitive to excess water.
Does sugar make a snake plant grow faster?
There is no solid evidence that sprinkling household sugar into the pot makes the plant develop faster or produce stiffer leaves. This species, now classified as Dracaena trifasciata and formerly known as Sansevieria trifasciata, is naturally relatively slow-growing. Its development depends chiefly on suitable light, healthy roots and a balanced supply of nutrients.
To encourage healthy growth, these measures are far more reliable:
- Keep the plant somewhere with bright indirect light;
- Allow the potting mix to dry before watering again;
- Choose a pot with drainage holes;
- Use an airy growing medium that does not stay waterlogged;
- Fertilise moderately during the growing period when needed.
Why can sugar also attract ants and fungus gnats?
Traces of sugar on a damp surface can feed insects and stimulate microbial activity in the upper layer of the pot. Fungus gnats are mainly linked to moist growing media rich in decomposing organic matter, while ants may be drawn to accessible sugary sources.
- Do not leave sugar crystals on the soil;
- Avoid keeping the pot constantly damp;
- Remove decaying leaves and other debris;
- Check the potting mix if small insects appear;
- Do not try to revive a weakened plant by adding more sugar.
The best care for a snake plant is still avoiding excess
The snake plant became popular because it tolerates dry spells and needs comparatively little maintenance. Its most common problem indoors is almost the opposite of a lack of sugar: overwatering can leave the roots without enough oxygen and encourage rot. Letting the growing medium dry between waterings is usually much more important than adding kitchen ingredients.
The sugar trick has a possible microbiological explanation, but that does not turn it into a gardening requirement. Indiscriminately feeding the microorganisms in a pot can lead to unpredictable effects and does not give the plant complete nutrition. Suitable light, effective drainage, moderate watering and balanced fertilisation remain safer ways to maintain firm leaves and healthy growth than scattering a spoonful of sugar over the potting mix.
