Four wheel motors, a 360°-scanning 3D LiDAR, two AI-powered cameras, the ability to tackle slopes of up to 80%, and a 40 cm cutting width across two decks: the wire-free Dreame A3 AWD Pro robotic lawn mower has only one target in its sights. Vast, steep and uneven gardens of up to 5,000 m² - the sort that make most other robots give up. Here is our verdict after three months of mowing.
More than three months: that is how long we needed to test the A3 AWD Pro 5000. Testing a robotic lawn mower cannot realistically be done in a week, especially not one as premium as Dreame’s latest model. This lengthy process also fits the brand’s approach to this category rather well.
While Dreame has no hesitation in flooding the market each year with cordless vacuum cleaners and robot vacuum cleaners, it is far more selective in the garden. In fact, it takes the opposite approach to brands such as Navimow and Mova, whose ranges grow by several models every spring. Since entering this segment in 2024, the company has consistently focused on the premium end with a single family each year. After the A1 in 2024 and the A2 last year, which had already impressed us greatly, the A3 now arrives as Dreame’s first 4×4.
Available in two versions rated for 3,500 and 5,000 m², priced at 2,599 and 2,999 euros respectively, the A3 range sits on the edge of semi-professional machines aimed at hotels and landscapers. In other words, the A3 AWD Pro is among the most ambitious robotic lawn mowers currently available to private owners.
To be frank, few gardens require such an extensive specification. This robot is designed for unusual plots combining large areas, changes in elevation, trees, roots and challenging ground. Its promise, in short, is to turn a trail-running course into a golf green. This full review examines whether it delivers on that bold claim.
A 24 kg heavyweight installed in under two hours
Exceptional is the word. At 74 cm long and 23.9 kg, this robotic lawn mower belongs in the heavyweight division. With its raised ground clearance, thick plastic reinforcements protecting the sides and wide bumper, it genuinely resembles a rally car.
Once that initial inspection is over, installation proves fairly swift. At this price, there is naturally no antenna cluttering up the lawn. The A3 AWD Pro works entirely without wires. After the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, mapping is ultimately the most time-consuming stage.
The way boundaries are drawn is clever. Initially guided with the virtual joystick, our A3 identified the lawn edges itself as it travelled and suggested continuing the boundary automatically. We let it take over on a relatively rectangular area, and it handled the task well.
Another strength is the fine level of detail available on the map. Around fifteen types of no-go area are offered, including swimming pools, trampolines and vegetable patches, while linking paths are especially easy to create. Our convoluted plot, measuring roughly 855 m², required only two hours to set up. Naturally, taking it all the way to its 5,000 m² capacity will demand more time. Given how straightforward its mapping system is to use, however, a productive Sunday should be enough.
A genuine 4×4 for almost every type of ground
Visually, the A3 AWD Pro’s wheels are impossible to ignore, as they form such a major part of its identity. At the rear, they are large and heavily treaded. At the front sits a much more unusual pair: two omnidirectional wheels made from a ring of angled rollers. This is uncommon in the sector and helps it move sideways and manoeuvre more easily.
This model also differs from the A2, which had two driven wheels, in another important way. It has all-wheel drive, meaning each of the four wheels has its own hub-mounted motor. The A3 AWD Pro can therefore turn on the spot and tackle tight corners, despite its substantial size.
Across every kind of terrain, this mobility lives up fully to its promise. Loose soil beside walls or around trees with large roots - both classic traps - never brought it to a halt. Not once in three months did we need to rescue it from an awkward situation. The same applies to uneven ground: the robot climbs over large decorative pebbles and manages the transition from grass to patios without stalling. Its generous ground clearance and 5.5 cm obstacle-crossing ability provide considerable help here.
There are still a few drawbacks to mention. The day after heavy rain, when the ground is waterlogged, the wheels can occasionally lose grip. Unfortunately, there is no dedicated traction-control option, such as the ability to temporarily limit drive through the app.
In these conditions, the front rollers leave marks on vulnerable areas. This is primarily a cosmetic issue, but it deserves to be noted. As for the 80% slopes claimed by Dreame, our garden did not include anything quite that steep. Even so, its dips and bumps never caused it any difficulty.
Dreame A3 AWD Pro: LiDAR navigation and twin cutting discs
Not only did it never get stuck over three months, the A3 AWD Pro never lost its way either. This was true even in the narrow, shaded path joining two of our areas. Three sharp eyes share the work: a 3D LiDAR scanning its surroundings through 360 degrees with a 70-metre range, plus two AI-powered cameras.
Known as OmniSense 3.0, this trio builds a three-dimensional representation of the garden and lets the robot locate itself using its immediate surroundings. It is a sensible choice, since models relying on satellite positioning can lose their bearings beneath dense trees or next to a wall. This precise vision also handles obstacle detection.
We tried every trap we could think of, including a garden hose laid across its path, yet none defeated it. It detected and avoided the hose every time. The A3 AWD is equally impressive when it comes to mowing. Beneath the machine are two floating discs, each fitted with three blades. Together, they provide a 40 cm cutting width - almost double that of conventional mid-range robots such as the Navimow i208 LiDAR.
The discs follow the contours of the ground to maintain an even cutting height, adjustable from 3 to 10 cm. Results are genuinely consistent, whether mowing fresh, tall grass or carrying out the lighter post-heatwave tidy-ups of recent weeks. EdgeMaster 2.0 takes charge at the boundaries, shifting the discs sideways to cut within less than 3 cm of the edges.
The result is excellent, almost making a manual edge trimmer redundant. For final work in the tightest spots, the app even includes a manual mowing mode that turns the A3 into a remote-controlled mower for stubborn corners.
It would be hard to find a more complete app
The qualities that built the manufacturer’s reputation with its household devices carry over into the garden. In its robotic lawn mower version, Dreamehome stands out as much for its clarity as for its depth of features.
Cutting height can be adjusted in 0.5 cm increments, while there are three working speeds, selectable stripe directions, crosshatch or chequerboard patterns, independent settings for every area, seasonal schedules, rain protection, automatic returns to the station whenever temperatures drop below 6 °C, and a reduced night-time speed. There is even a low-branch setting instructing the robot to ignore them. It is a welcome detail for the small paths connecting our different areas, where most robots stop dead after interpreting clusters of branches as impassable obstacles.
Dreame is also generous with connectivity, including 4G access for three years. After that, expect to pay 50 euros per year to keep this extra feature. It means there is no need to be at home to remain in control of the robot: it can be operated from anywhere, its location can be tracked in real time, and alerts are sent if it is lifted or detects someone in the garden.
However, a Wi-Fi connection is essential for a live feed from the onboard camera. This is unsurprising, but owners of very large gardens will need to invest in a repeater if they want to monitor the far end of their plot remotely.
Charging time to match its strong battery life
With its 10 Ah battery, the A3 AWD is ready for long mowing sessions. It consistently completed the main area of our map, covering 415 m², in one go in around two hours. On every occasion, the robot left its station fully charged and returned with 50 to 60% battery remaining.
Based on these figures, it should therefore be able to cover between 800 and 900 m² on a single charge before automatically returning to its station. We then confirmed this estimate in real-world conditions. When mowing our entire 855 m² plot, the robot almost always completed everything in one run. On two or three occasions, a small area of 50 to 80 m² was left unfinished. This variation mainly depends on the mowing settings and how obstacles are handled.
Extrapolated to 5,000 m², it would need close to 24 hours of mowing, plus five or six recharging sessions. That puts the total at between 34 and 36 hours. The estimate will vary with terrain complexity and the selected speed, but it still gives a clear sense of the time needed for XXL gardens.
Finally, maintaining the A3 AWD Pro is fairly simple. Its IPX6 rating means the chassis and cutting decks can be rinsed with a hose. A quick brush is then enough to remove accumulated soil from the wheels. The availability of certain spare parts is more questionable, however. At the time of this review, the shop mainly offered blades, a cleaning kit and a garage for 249 euros.
We found neither a separately sold battery nor replacement wheels. On a robot at this price, they ought to be easy to replace.
Our verdict on the Dreame A3 AWD Pro 5000 robotic lawn mower
After more than three months with it, it is difficult not to be complimentary about the A3 AWD Pro 5000. Its all-wheel drive prevents it from becoming trapped by roots, dips or demanding slopes, while its LiDAR and two cameras enable precise navigation without it ever losing its way. The 40 cm cutting width produces a neat cut and clean borders. Battery life is as generous as the long list of settings in its app.
That said, it is not flawless. Its omnidirectional wheels mark waterlogged ground, its 24 kg weight makes the rare occasions when it must be moved more difficult, and spare parts availability remains limited for now. For a machine launched at 2,999 euros, one could also reasonably have expected the station shelter to be included. These are minor complaints, certainly, but legitimate ones at this price.
Nevertheless, none of this changes the essential point. This robot was never intended for ordinary gardens. It is aimed at large, uneven plots with slopes, narrow passages and irregular ground - the sort of garden that makes entry-level and mid-range models look inadequate.
That is where Dreame has its strongest card to play. While models priced between 800 and 2,000 euros are plentiful, they become scarce beyond that point. As a result, the A3 AWD Pro has only a handful of direct rivals.
The Mammotion Luba 3 AWD, at 3,199 euros, is the closest alternative. Its navigation combines LiDAR and NetRTK, though, making it dependent on good 4G or Wi-Fi coverage. The Navimow X450, also 3,199 euros, likewise relies on satellite positioning and goes further with a 43 cm cutting width.
Finally, the RockMow Z150, at 3,499 euros, stands out with an 8 cm obstacle-crossing capability and steerable front wheels, again at the cost of reliance on an RTK signal. As well as being the least expensive of the group, the A3 AWD Pro is the only one to use fully onboard navigation. On the most challenging terrain, that is probably its real luxury.
