A lot of homeowners immediately assume they’ll need costly drainage work involving a digger, gravel and pipes. In many situations, though, there’s a different option that’s far cheaper: planting tough, moisture-loving groundcovers that steadily stabilise waterlogged soil over time.
Why a garden turns into a muddy mess in the first place
When a garden stays muddy for long periods, it’s almost always down to a mix of heavy soil and poor drainage. Clayey and loamy soils are the usual culprits. They compact easily, water struggles to soak in, runs across the surface and then collects in hollows as puddles. The top layer ends up as a slippery, churned-up sludge.
It gets worse on bare patches with no plant cover. Without roots to bind the soil, rain hits the ground directly, washes out fine particles and makes the surface even slicker. In some gardens, a high water table or poorly directed rainwater from downpipes adds to the problem.

How groundcovers transform a wet garden
Over time, groundcover plants knit together into a continuous carpet. That living layer strengthens the soil surface, shields it from erosion and greatly reduces open muddy patches. The plants also draw up some of the moisture without turning the area into dry ground. Perennials that spread via rhizomes and runners build more and more root mass each year-effectively a natural reinforcement belt for the soil.

- Creeping Jenny / moneywort: Very low and spreading, with long trailing stems that fill gaps around stepping stones or paving. It tolerates waterlogged soil and copes with occasional walking.
- Isotoma fluviatilis: Often marketed as an alternative “lawn” plant. It makes a dense, flowering carpet, but it’s vigorous and should be kept from wandering unchecked into beds.
- Lesser periwinkle: Quickly greens up damp banks and keeps areas looking leafy all year round. In some places it’s considered invasive, so it needs keeping under control.
How to plant groundcovers properly in wet soils
Even plants that like moisture benefit from some preparation. On very heavy ground, it’s often enough to gently loosen the top 15–20 centimetres and work in well-rotted compost. Important: don’t cultivate the soil when it’s saturated, as that can compact it further.
- Loosen only the surface layer-avoid deep digging in boggy ground.
- Mix in compost to improve structure and nutrients.
- Add a handful of coarse sand or fine gravel beneath each plant so water doesn’t sit right at the roots.
- Plant fairly close together so the soil is covered quickly and doesn’t revert to mud.
