Females deposit eggs into moist potting mix, and once hatched the larvae feed on decomposing organic material as well as delicate feeder roots.

Sciarid fly problems start in wet compost. Control the moisture and surface, and you choke off the population where it begins.

Most robust, established plants can tolerate a small amount of larval feeding. Seedlings, fresh cuttings and any plant already under strain are far less resilient. Indoor growers commonly report:

  • Sciarid flies: long-legged and mosquito-like; drawn to damp compost; often run over the compost surface before taking flight.

If flies persist despite the sand layer and drier compost, and the traps are filling with insects that seem to originate from shelves, bins or kitchen areas rather than pots, the source may not be your plants at all.
