Google launches Google AI Edge Eloquent on iPhone

Google has just introduced Google AI Edge Eloquent for iPhone. The app uses on-device AI, with no internet connection required, to automatically polish voice dictation.

Building on its advances in artificial intelligence, Google is developing a broad range of apps designed to boost productivity. One of its latest offerings is Google AI Edge Eloquent, a new iPhone app for taking notes through voice dictation. However, unlike standard dictation apps and features, which simply transcribe everything - absolutely everything - verbatim, Google’s new technology turns spoken dictation into corrected, more coherent text.

Google AI Edge Eloquent uses on-device AI

Google AI Edge Eloquent relies on AI models that run locally through Google's Gemma technology. These models can identify what the user is trying to say, removing mid-sentence corrections and hesitations, such as “erm” and “um”. In other words, the AI automatically converts dictation into a usable transcript, without needing to process information on a cloud server. This provides a higher degree of privacy while ensuring the feature remains available when the iPhone has no internet connection.

The app is free and also offers several useful tools. Users can, for instance, ask the AI to make the tone more formal or create a summary containing the key points. It is also possible to add technical jargon to the app’s dictionary, making transcriptions more accurate.

The app is not yet available in France, but it is coming

At present, Google AI Edge Eloquent is available only on iPhone and supports English only. For regulatory reasons, the new app has “limited” availability in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and countries in the European Economic Area. Nevertheless, the company intends to roll out this new tool to as many users as possible.

More languages and platforms could follow

Google AI Edge Eloquent may also reach other platforms, including computer operating systems. Google is already working on updates that will support additional languages. As for Europe, the company is already seeking the necessary approvals to launch the new tool across the continent.

With this app, Google is demonstrating what its AI can do when it is designed to operate locally on a device rather than relying on data centres. Google already offers another app, called Google AI Edge Gallery, which lets smartphone users run local AI models instead of ChatGPT or Gemini.
