Many people reach for drastic measures straight away - and end up undermining their own garden happiness.
Molehills are often seen as the number-one irritation in a well-kept lawn. What many amateur gardeners miss is that these small diggers are doing heavy work beneath the turf that can benefit both your lawn and your veg patch over time. If you drive them out ruthlessly - or kill them - you may be throwing away a surprisingly valuable ally in the soil.
Why moles are so annoying - especially on a perfect lawn
Mole tunnels typically run about 15 to 30 centimetres below the surface and finish in the familiar piles of soil. From above, the lawn can look scarred and uneven, and the dream of an immaculate English-style lawn feels ruined. Walking across it becomes bumpy, children can trip when playing, and mowing turns into a constant jolt.
In the vegetable garden, tunnels can lift young plants, leaving roots exposed and beds looking disturbed. That can be intensely frustrating when you have invested so much effort in lawns and borders. Objectively, though, moles usually do far less damage than people assume - outright plant losses are relatively uncommon.

What moles really do for your soil
The European mole is a highly specialised construction worker. With powerful forepaws and a streamlined body, it pushes through loose, humus-rich ground - especially where earthworms are plentiful and the soil does not dry out completely.
The result is a finely branching tunnel network. This underground “tube map” brings several advantages at once:
- Better aeration: The tunnels loosen the soil so oxygen can penetrate deeper.
- Improved drainage: Waterlogging decreases because rainwater can soak away more easily.
- Less compaction: In heavy, clay-rich soils, moles help break up hard layers.
- A light nutrient boost: Droppings and urine within the tunnel system add nutrients on a small scale.
One common misunderstanding is that moles are thought of as plant-eaters. They are not. Moles are carnivores and go for anything soft-bodied that creeps through the soil.
What moles actually want to eat
Their menu mainly includes:
- Earthworms
- Beetle larvae, such as chafer grubs
- Caterpillars, wireworms and other soil pests
- Slugs and snails, if they are within reach
A single mole can eat roughly its own body weight in prey each day. In doing so, it cuts down the numbers of root and leaf attackers that would otherwise feed on grasses, perennials and vegetable plants.

The big trap: trying to wipe out moles completely

- put pets, children and beneficial wildlife at risk,
- can lead to legal trouble,
- remove a natural hunter of garden pests.
There is also a practical issue: an empty territory rarely stays empty for long. In good soil, new animals tend to move in sooner or later. The cycle of control followed by re-occupation is hard to end.
How to benefit from moles without letting them wreck the garden
The smart approach is not to eliminate moles at all costs. It is more effective to steer them towards areas where they are allowed to be active, while protecting sensitive spaces from the outset.
Protecting lawns and vegetable beds with wire mesh
If you are laying a new lawn or creating a new vegetable bed, you can greatly limit mole damage by installing a mole barrier beneath the surface. The basic idea is:
- When preparing the area, lay a fine-mesh plastic or wire grid.
- Position the grid about 40 to 50 centimetres deep, then build up the surface as usual.
- Tunnels stop at the barrier, and the animals shift sideways into other parts of the garden.
That way, a showpiece front lawn or a densely planted veg bed can stay largely free of hills, while in a less prominent area the soil can still be loosened and pests hunted.
Practical everyday ways to “relocate” moles
In established gardens, gentler techniques can help nudge moles away from vulnerable zones:
- Metal rods with bottles: Drive iron rods into the ground and place empty plastic bottles on top. The wind creates vibrations and noise that travel through the soil - many moles avoid those areas.
- Ultrasonic devices: Purpose-made units emit vibrations that moles find unpleasant, without harming the soil.
- Create quiet refuge areas: A wilder corner with long grass, fruit trees or shrubs offers ideal conditions. Moles are more likely to stay there if they feel undisturbed.

Why soil from molehills is worth its weight in gold
The thrown-up earth may look messy, but it is a gift. It is naturally fine and comes from deeper layers, usually free of roots and stones. That is exactly the texture gardeners want for sowing and potting.

- as loose compost-like soil for seed trays and pots
- for topping up balcony planters and containers
- for seed drills in the vegetable bed
- to level small dips and bumps in the lawn
Simply lift the hills with a spade, remove any larger clods, and collect the soil in buckets or bags. If you want to be extra cautious, run it through a sieve once. Each hill then becomes a small reserve of free growing medium.
Handling things sensibly with children and pets
In family gardens, safety matters. Instead of risky chemicals, rely on clear rules and straightforward maintenance:
- Rake hills flat before children run around or play football.
- Use the hill soil to fill and level trip hazards in the lawn.
- Avoid dangerous methods such as gas or poison entirely.
- If you have a dog, make sure it does not dig into tunnels and injure itself.

Many people confuse moles with voles - and therefore misjudge the damage. The differences are clear:

If you allow moles some space, you can benefit in the long run from:
- more stable soil structure during heavy rain and drought
- naturally reduced soil pests
- free “cultivation” in areas that are hard to work by hand
Especially as weather becomes more extreme, these natural helpers can make a garden more resilient. A few hills soon feel less dramatic - particularly if you use the soil well and protect sensitive areas intelligently.
