Homemade Potting Compost: How to Replace Shop-Bought Peat-Based Soil

When you start getting beds ready in spring, it’s almost automatic to end up in a DIY store, standing in front of pallets stacked with bags of potting compost. It’s convenient, of course. Yet that easy grab-from-the-shelf choice comes with knock-on effects for the environment, your budget and even soil quality. At the same time, there’s a surprisingly straightforward approach that capable gardeners use to make high-quality compost themselves - no specialist knowledge and no big outlay required.

Why shop-bought potting compost hides an environmental problem

Most commercially sold composts look harmless at first glance: a black, crumbly mix in a plastic bag, ready to use. But behind many of these products sits significant pressure on sensitive habitats.

One of the main issues is the high peat content found in many mixes. Peat is taken from peatlands - landscapes that have formed over thousands of years and store huge amounts of carbon. Once peat is extracted, some of that stored carbon is released into the atmosphere as CO₂.

The most important building block is classic compost. What you already generate in the kitchen and garden as “waste” becomes the foundation of a nutrient-rich mix for beds:

  • Vegetable and fruit scraps, peelings and stalks
  • Filter coffee and tea bags with no plastic content
  • Crushed eggshells

During extended dry spells, a small amount of water can keep the process moving. Water thoroughly once, then cover with leaves or cardboard so the moisture doesn’t evaporate straight away.

How long it takes for waste to turn into usable compost varies with temperature and your mix. Summer speeds things up; winter slows them down. After around three to nine months, you’ll usually have a dark, crumbly mass where the original ingredients are barely recognisable. At that point at the latest, the contents can serve as a base for potting compost, bed soil or planting substrate.

Less waste, more yield: why making your own compost pays twice

If you can make room in the garden or yard for a compost bin, you immediately cut the volume of general waste. Kitchen scraps that used to go in the bin become a valuable resource. Many councils even support this through lower waste charges.

At the same time, your spending at the garden centre drops. Anyone with larger beds knows the pain at the checkout when several heavy bags of compost are piled into the trolley. Homemade mixes can save noticeable money year after year.

  • For container plants: Half compost, one quarter garden soil, and one quarter sand or wood fibre. This produces an airy substrate with enough nutrients.
  • For sowing: Mature, sieved compost mixed with the same amount of sand. This way young roots won’t be “burnt”, but still have sufficient nourishment.

If you notice plants producing lots of leafy growth at the expense of everything else, reduce the compost share slightly. If growth looks pale and weak, it can help to add an extra boost by spreading a thin layer of compost over the surface.

What many people underestimate: risks and how to avoid them easily

Of course, composting can go wrong. A few simple precautions help you avoid the classic pitfalls:

  • Use cooked food scraps only very sparingly, as they can attract rats.
  • Put diseased plant material in the general waste to avoid spreading fungal spores and pests.
  • Keep heavily printed cardboard and plastic packaging films out of the heap because of possible contaminants.

Beginners, in particular, benefit from starting with small amounts and watching what happens. Your nose and eyes are excellent guides: if the heap smells musty, something is off with air or moisture. If it looks grey and dry, it needs moisture and fresh material.
