A lot of garden owners only realise in March just how much moss has taken over their lawn. That is when the frustration hits: bare patches, soggy ground, and very little rich green. There is an older approach-once completely normal in many households-that starts much earlier, before the moss really gets going.
Why moss suddenly shows up all over the lawn in spring
After a wet winter, the soil is often saturated and compacted. Water sits on the surface, and hardly any air reaches the upper layers. Those are ideal conditions for moss. It needs very few nutrients, copes with cold and shade better than lawn grass, and spreads fastest where the turf is already struggling.
Typical trouble spots include:
- shaded areas under trees or alongside hedges
- low-lying corners where water lingers
- heavily used areas that are regularly walked on or played on
- soils with a low pH (too acidic)
If the lawn is also cut very short, the grass has little strength to grow away from the moss. Many people mow too low in autumn and early spring. That weakens the blades, while moss continues to grow quite happily.

The old method from Grandma’s garden: iron first, then sand
This traditional routine follows a simple idea: instead of panicking and tackling moss late in spring, strengthen the lawn at the end of winter and improve the soil before the season properly starts. It happens in two stages-using iron sulphate and then river sand.
Step 1: iron sulphate drives out moss and supports the grass
Iron sulphate is a long-established aid in horticulture. Used correctly, it causes moss to die back and can also deepen the lawn’s green colour, because iron is an important component of chlorophyll.
This is how the first part of the routine works:
- Right timing: late winter, once the soil is no longer frozen but before growth really kicks in. A dry, overcast day is ideal.
- Mixing: dissolve the powder in water-exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Too strong a solution can damage lawn grass.
- Applying: spread evenly over the lawn using a watering can or pressure sprayer. Avoid creating puddles.
- Waiting: within a few days, the moss turns dark brown to black and dries out.
- Raking out: remove the dead material thoroughly with a rake or scarifier.
A key point when handling iron sulphate: the solution can leave rusty stains on light stone, patio slabs and concrete. Rinse any splashes immediately with plenty of water. Also avoid walking on the freshly treated lawn until everything has dried properly.
Step 2: a thin layer of sand to improve the soil
This is where the second part of the old home remedy comes in-something many modern guides barely mention. Once the moss has been removed, apply a fine layer of washed river sand to the lawn. Experienced hobby gardeners often used to mix in a little finely ground volcanic rock dust as well.
The mix is used like this:
- Material: washed river sand (not sharp building sand) plus around 10–15 percent rock dust
- Amount: roughly a 2–3 millimetre layer across the whole lawn
- Spreading: distribute evenly, then work in lightly with a rake
The result is better drainage: water soaks away faster and waterlogging eases. At the same time, the top layer’s structure shifts-moss finds the conditions less favourable, while grass roots can push down more easily.

What still matters after the spring routine
A one-off treatment can give a strong start, but the lawn needs ongoing support through the year or the issue will return. Many setbacks happen in everyday care-mowing, feeding, or watering.
Mowing properly: keep it a bit higher
For most private gardens, a lawn height of 5–6 centimetres works well. It encourages a denser root system, lightly shades the soil, and leaves moss less space to establish. Keeping the grass at 2–3 centimetres weakens the lawn and makes it easier for unwanted plants to take hold.
Practical guidance for the season:
- Never remove more than a third of the blade length in one go
- In heat and drought, mow less often and set the height higher
- Avoid blunt blades-they tear rather than cut
Scarifying and aerating: getting air back into the ground
Many gardeners treat scarifying as a punishment. Paired with the old late-winter trick, however, it has a clear purpose. A light scarify in spring after the iron sulphate treatment clears remaining moss and thatch and opens up the sward. In autumn, a second gentle pass can help prepare the lawn for winter.
Once a year, it is also worth doing what is often called aeration. Using specialist forks or equipment, you punch small holes into the soil and then fill them with sand. This gets air to the roots, allows rain to drain deeper, and reduces compaction over time.
Gentle helpers: nutrients, ash and bicarbonate of soda
If you want to do the lawn some good over the year, milder options are usually the better choice. Strong synthetic fertilisers can push growth hard, but they may also leave the lawn more vulnerable to disease and drought stress.
Experienced gardeners tend to favour:
- organic slow-release feeds with a moderate nitrogen content
- well-rotted compost applied in a very thin layer
- small amounts of finely sieved wood ash from untreated timber
Some people sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda on stubborn moss patches. Locally, it can raise the pH and weaken the moss. The dose should stay low, and using it over large areas is not sensible.
How to tell what your lawn is actually missing
A quick look at how the ground behaves can tell you a lot. If puddles form after rain, the subsoil is likely badly compacted or drainage is poor. If the grass looks pale yellow, nutrients or iron are often lacking. If moss appears mainly in the shade of mature trees, low light is a major factor-sometimes the only realistic answer is accepting the site or switching to a shade-tolerant lawn seed mix.
If you want certainty, send a soil sample to a laboratory. The results will show whether the pH is strongly acidic and which nutrients are genuinely missing. With that information, the old winter method using iron sulphate and sand can be paired precisely with the right feeding plan.
What can go wrong with iron sulphate and sand
Despite the benefits, there are a few common pitfalls. If iron sulphate is overdosed, it can scorch the grass-especially in direct sun and dry conditions. That is why it must always be mixed strictly to the instructions.
Care is also needed with the sand layer. If it is applied too thickly, it can smother the blades instead of helping them. Anyone putting down more than a few millimetres risks losing the lawn under the topdressing. Sharp-edged building sand is unsuitable anyway; it can compact rather than loosen.
Used correctly, the old approach is surprisingly effective-particularly in gardens where the same dark mossy patches reappear every spring. If you start in late winter and then keep the grass consistently a little higher, you will often see a noticeably denser, tougher lawn after just one season, with far less moss.
