My grandmother tackled the problem right at this stage. Instead of waiting for moss to surge in spring, she deliberately got her lawn ready at the tail end of winter. Her method was disarmingly straightforward: a mineral aid, a little sand - and a clear schedule for what to do, and when.
Why moss can take over the lawn so easily in spring
After a wet winter, the ground is often compacted and saturated. The grass has struggled, with too little light and warmth, and many roots are weakened. For moss, that is close to perfect: damp, cool and with very little competition.
It spreads especially fast in situations like these:
- shaded spots beneath trees or alongside walls
- poorly drained soils where water sits for a long time
- heavily compacted areas, for example from frequent footfall
- very acidic soils with low nutrient levels
- lawns cut too low, leaving the grass with few reserves
Looking at many problem lawns, the pattern is familiar: the turf is mown extremely short, the soil is hard as concrete, and water cannot drain away properly. In other words, the moss is practically being invited in.

The old garden rule: iron first, then sand
This is exactly where my grandmother’s trick came in. She treated the lawn in two uncomplicated stages: first with iron sulphate, then with a thin dressing of river sand mixed with rock dust.
Step 1: Iron sulphate halts the moss and supports the grass
Towards the end of winter - once the soil was no longer frozen, but before the main growth period began - she carried out the first application:
- dissolve iron sulphate in water (use the mixing ratio on the packet)
- apply evenly over the lawn on a dry, lightly overcast day
- leave it to work for a few days without disturbance
Iron sulphate works in two ways. It draws moisture out of the moss, so the cushions darken, dry out and die back. At the same time, the iron encourages chlorophyll formation in the grass. That helps produce a richer green colour and a sturdier, more resilient sward.
One detail mattered to her: after application, she avoided walking over the lawn as much as possible. Any splashes on paving slabs or concrete needed rinsing off immediately with water, otherwise unsightly rust stains could appear.
After a few days, the right moment arrives: the moss patches turn black and become brittle. That is when the rake comes out. She thoroughly raked out the dead cushions. At first the lawn can look alarmingly bare, but that is precisely where recovery starts.
Step 2: River sand improves the soil for the long term
Many home-garden treatments stop after raking - and this is exactly where my grandmother added a second, decisive step. Straight after clearing the lawn, she spread a fine layer of river sand across the whole area, mixed with a little volcanic rock dust.
Her rule of thumb was:
- layer thickness: around 2 to 3 millimetres over the entire lawn
- rock dust proportion: roughly 10 to 15 per cent in the sand mix
River sand is more angular and heavier than ordinary play sand. With the next rainfall, it works its way into the upper soil layers and gently opens them up. Water can infiltrate more effectively, waterlogging reduces, and the surface is less likely to cap over. This better-aerated, less waterlogged structure suits grass - while moss loses its advantage.
The rock dust contributes additional minerals and, over time, can help keep the pH level a little more stable. The soil becomes more balanced, grass roots have better access to nutrients, and the site becomes less appealing for moss.

What still matters after the spring routine
A single spring intervention does not win the battle on its own. The care steps that follow decide whether the lawn stays on top, or whether moss simply fills the gaps again the next winter.
Correct mowing height: don’t cut too short
Many amateur gardeners mow far too low. It may reduce mowing for a short while, but it weakens every blade. My grandmother set the mower so that around 5 to 6 centimetres remained.
That extra height brings clear benefits:
- grasses develop deeper, denser roots
- the soil is better shaded and does not dry out as extremely
- weeds and moss receive less light at the soil surface
A strong, dense lawn leaves moss very little room to spread. Where there is less light at ground level, moss struggles far more.
Aerate and scarify regularly
Alongside mowing height, she placed real emphasis on soil health. Once or twice a year she used a scarifier, usually in spring and autumn. This pulls out old thatch, dead plant material and any remaining moss from the turf.
In areas that were particularly compacted, she loosened the ground further using spiked aeration shoes or a fork, punching holes into the soil. That lets more air reach the roots, helps water drain away faster, and increases activity from soil organisms.
Feed gently rather than overdoing it
To avoid stressing the lawn, she preferred mild, measured nutrition. A moderate lawn fertiliser in spring and late summer supported steady growth. From time to time she added finely sieved wood ash in a very small amount, lightly scattered. Some gardeners also sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda onto damp soil on individual stubborn moss patches - that can help locally as well.
The key is restraint: too much fertiliser may push leafy growth, but it can weaken the plant overall because the roots cannot keep up. The result is stressed grasses that once again leave space for moss.
When the method is worthwhile - and what to watch out for
The combination of iron sulphate and river sand is particularly suitable for clay-heavy, wet or heavily used lawns. On light, sandy soils that already drain well, simply avoiding ultra-low mowing and scarifying regularly is often enough.
If you have young children or pets, take care when handling iron sulphate. It should be kept out of children’s reach, gloves are sensible when mixing, and animals should ideally stay off the area during the active period. After the first heavy rain, the risk is significantly reduced.
A quick soil test can also be useful. If the pH value is extremely low, the soil is strongly acidic and moss has an even easier time. In those cases, applying lime can make sense - but only if the analysis confirms it. Liming without measuring can quickly push conditions in the wrong direction.
Practical additions for a consistently strong lawn
If you are already working on the lawn, you can combine the spring routine with a few extra steps. After scarifying and sanding, bare patches can be closed up effectively with an overseeding mix. The young grasses fill gaps before moss can gain a foothold again.
In very shaded areas, a strategic rethink can pay off. Sometimes the best protection against moss is changing how the space is used. A narrow bark-mulch path, a bed, or shade-tolerant ground cover can replace lawn where grass is permanently at a disadvantage.
That is how a simple grandmother’s piece of advice becomes a coherent approach: not only dealing with moss once it has already smothered everything, but preparing the soil early in the year so the grass remains the stronger side. With a bit of planning in late winter, the classic spring frustration - a spongy, dark lawn - can surprisingly often be avoided.
